JACQUES, JULIA AND JAMIE

Saturday afternoon my Mrs. Greenbean and the girls were out shopping for dresses and stuff and I had some free time.  I had worked most of the morning and, honestly, was just thinking about kicking back in the recliner and napping.  I know that as a card carrying man I should be watching college football, because it was Saturday.  However, I was flipping through the television and spotted something that caught my eye.

That’s right, it was Julia Child and Jacques Pepin on PBS!  This demanded my attention.  Julia Child of course is a great cooking hero but Jacques Pepin—what a stud!  I mean, seriously, he is like the coolest chef guy ever.

Julia and Jacques were baking soufflés and they looked so yummy.  One was a desert soufflés and the other was a scallop soufflés.  I could almost smell the kitchen flavor as they whisked, beat, and baked.

Jacques Pepin used to have a regular weekly show on PBS that I watched all the time when I was in college.  I learned a lot about simple cooking techniques from watching him.  He always uses fresh ingredients and he encourages me to never over cook the meat!  To my knowledge Pepin had three shows–one with Julia, one by himself, and a third with his daughter.  I didn’t care for that so much because I found her lack of cooking skills annoying.  She seemed to be in the way.  I’m sure she is nice and all, but she didn’t have that cook’s instinct—and those of you who cook know what I mean.

Before I found Pepin on tv as a young man, the only people I’d ever seen cook were women—mostly my mother, grandmother, aunt, and my friend’s mothers.  My father can cook very well, but he never did it unless we were camping, and then it was always fried fish, potatoes and breakfast foods like sausage and eggs.  The idea of my father baking a soufflés, for example, is just impossible for me to imagine.  But Pepin, somehow, in a smooth, confident and definitely French way made cooking come alive for me as a guy thing to do.

Of course, Pepin doesn’t do much anymore in terms of tv, although I think he still puts out cookbooks.  What I find fascinating is that most of the major cooking personalities on television today are masculine—Alton Brown, Anthony Bourdain, and a host of other people who do tv shows about food.  Yeah, I know there are plenty of women out there on television who cook great food, like Paula Dean but it fills me with a certain amount of joy that food can be a man’s game.

And, after all, when a man cooks he can eat his labor.  Eating footballs is never much fun.  It was a delightful half-hour of nostalgia and testosterone fueled indulgence.  Of course, when the show was over I took my nap and dreamed of making soufflés in a gadget filled kitchen of my dreams.

  1. Do you know the saddest thing about having the super basic cable channel? No Food Network! We–and mostly I mean The Man–love the Food Network. He’s definitely more of a cook than I am. It’s actually better for everyone involved if I stay out of kitchens. But I do love to watch a really good cook at work…

    • your man is a great man! jacques pepin was on the PBS when i was in college and i was too poor to have any kind of cable so PBS was one of my four options. i lived on a steady diet of PBS, star trek t ng, and x-files. of course, that was before the advent of the food channel or the travel channel, but now the addiction continues. i love to watch no reservations on the travel channel. if you remove all the crude profanity and such, that guy seems to view food, and travel, sort of like i do. i hope that is not a sin.

      • ha ha ha ha. nice. nice indeed. is it wrong that i prefer watching him when he is in places he doesn’t really like, and you can tell? those make me laugh. i need to read his book, but my reading pile is a mile high. maybe i should watch less t.v. and read more, huh?

  2. Lead Pastor ,

Greetings to you. How do you do in the Lord ?

God Has given you a powerful message you to deliver to us.

He Has given you a free gift of life so that you can get out of your country to go all over the world to preach the gospel and win more souls to God.

We are requesting you to put a system in place to disciple and train many to help you. As you disciple us, you will transfer the Spirit that is in you on to them.God will fulfill his plan for you into the next generation.

God has also called you for a purpose. As you obediently follow him,you are also building a Spiritual legacy.

You are laying a strong foundations for something that must continue into the next generations.

The Bible also tells us to disciple new believers so that they can fulfill their ministry.Even in the great commission Jesus does not just to go out to the Nations and evangelize them.

.No! He tells us to evangelize them and then to teach to teach them what is expected of them.

Apostle Paul, was called by God at the time of his conversion, but that internal call was recognize by the congregation.while he was working with Barnabas the congregations, they could see that he was truly called by God.

In the disciple process there is the life example of the teacher as well as a deliberate importation of knowledge.

God want you to produce mature followers of Christ who will be able to fulfill the task for which God has called you for.

Some of these disciple eventually become the leader of the church just of Jesus disciples become apostles who were the leaders of the early church. Barnabas disciple Paul, who become an apostle in his own right.

He again disciple Timothy who become a leader of a congregation.Paul told him to continue that process of leadership development.

Timothy had to train people who would in their turn become leaders who would train others.

One day those who are leading will give an account to the owner of the church about the way in which they led the people to God-over whom God had appointed them, to lead. the big deal is just to produce mature and disciple the people for God,s work.
